How the Ingress Game Works
Ingress uses your phone’s GPS to connect the game to real locations you can visit on foot. When you arrive at one of these locations, you can interact with it inside the app.
The game is designed to encourage exploration. You move through your neighborhood, parks, downtown areas, and trails while discovering places you may have walked past for years without noticing.
Progress comes from participation, not speed. Walking, exploring, and contributing over time matter more than playing nonstop.
Real-World Locations and Exploration
Ingress locations are based on physical places that exist in the real world. These can include:
Public art and murals
Historic markers and monuments
Churches and community buildings
Parks, trails, and overlooks
These locations help players learn about their surroundings and see their community in a new way.
Factions and Community Play
Every player chooses one of two global factions. While the factions compete, the heart of Ingress is cooperation.
Players coordinate locally, share knowledge, and help new players learn. Many communities organize walks, meetups, and monthly events where people can connect in person.
You do not need to be competitive to enjoy Ingress. Some players focus on exploration, others on photography, and many simply enjoy being part of a local group.
Why People Play Ingress
People play Ingress for many reasons:
To explore their town or city
To walk more and spend time outdoors
To discover history and public art
To meet new people
To give purpose to travel and photography
Ingress gives structure to exploration without rushing it.
Is the Ingress Game Free?
Yes. Ingress is free to download and play. Optional in-app purchases exist, but they are not required to enjoy the game or participate in the community.
Players can progress at their own pace without spending money.
